Magazine Evaluation Questions

Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My magazine was hard to make mainly because there wasn’t many magazines that specified in the genre I choose to base my magazine off of. The title was a unique font I used; the first thing I wanted the audience to see was this font. Most fonts are basic if you look at Mojos compared to my font it’s a standard 2d font with not much to keep it that appealing to the reader. The font was supposed to be abstract, but have a technological feel to it. When you look at the words LINK your brain has to try and read what it says, and if your fan of the magazine instantly you know what the name is just like a brand name.
If the magazine is interpreted using mise en scene, the layout of the front page, contents and double page spread all try to portray the essence of a gamer and movie buff much like an average magazine attempts to portray the musician in the best light known to him. The front picture shows our musician on a laptop a decadent machine of today’s technology, with ear phones and teenaged styled clothing. The positioning on the front page is much like most front pages of any magazine. You have an image of the musician who’s being featured, and you have subtitles on the sides to explain the most intriguing features in the magazine this being in my magazine an interview with the musician on the front.

The images used in my magazine are similar to how any other magazine would have their images, they relate to the artist. However my images (mainly on the contents page scrolling down the right of the page) are all from games which have had famous songs that have reach internet fame across the web. They are renowned for having memorable, and inspirational music by famous artists as well. This is how a music magazine would display images of a music artist on their pages.

On the front page there is a lot taken from music magazines, popular in music magazines in colour coordination. On my front page it has a particular colour scheme followed by Black – White – Black – White under the subtitles. I used different styled fonts for each subtitle and description below the subtitle as well, this developed onto my adaption of what most music magazines use on their front page.

The layout of my double page spread was very skilful. It was intended to be very plain and have writing placed about in an array of different sized writing all of which were the same font of course. The questions were styled like a pixel font and the answers like a standard font, this was to set again a digital feel to enhance the mood of the magazine. It develops on traditional fonts and it styled particularly to my magazine only. The picture of the artist is taking up about 3/5 of the page giving him the perfect room to be seen, this is like a lot of double page spreads on magazines. An artist relating to the page is seen taking up a lot of room and there is text surrounding him in one place explaining what they’ve recently achieved. My double page was about this artist in an interview and the background was plain white, it was to mimic a lot of magazines but keep an original style the questions and answers are all spaced apart.

My Contents page had an impressive selection of pictures, background effects, fonts and colour scheme. It was designed to be cluttered like a lot of pages are, have not much room left spared, using pixel art blocks I made bullet point looking measurements, and had a unique selection of colours to follow. The colour scheme was black, white, green, and yellow. Green and yellow were only to support the really interesting features. The title for the contents page simply being ‘contents’ was placed slightly off the side for an affect, to appear abstract and unique. The audience already knows what the page is by the style and the title doesn’t need to be in the picture so its just adding to something that’s not really there. On a lot of front pages magazines often have an Artist or image blocking part of the title, so in a way this is similar to that and it works very effectively as it goes against the normal routine.

The people I used in this magazine were mainly people of my age group, people who would read this magazine who would respond and be able to appeal to the right audience. Much like a normal magazine I developed this by adding what I believe interests the social group aimed towards this magazine. Things like technology and artistic style would suit them, I choose people who would suit this ideal and would respond to the style I wanted to portray.

The background images I used were simple but very affective, a lot of the time they were blurred so that they were too eye catching, this was so that the reader wouldn’t find too much going on at one time on the page. There wasn’t too many things to be confused or to stare at. On the double page spread I removed the background entirely to give the effect of space, and make the reader feel open with the writing and not rushed and cramped into a tight page. The outcome was effective. On the contents page the background image was kept sharp but blurred at the bottom. I decided to add other images to this background to go on the foreground after researching magazine contents pages and seeing the style they were presented in.

The last element that I really took seriously was the colour scheme, since our eyes find anything more than 3 colours hard to identify I made it my objective to limit colours to 2 basic colours, then have 1 or 2 serious colours that caused one part of the magazine to stick out to the reader. The colour scheme worked effectively well and allowed me to progress further into styling the colours more, on certain pages I obviously didn’t stick to the scheme mainly due to the images added as they were bright and colourful.

Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine since it’s a unique magazine contains a unique stereotype. There’s no real definition of nickname for this stereotype one could call them a gamer or a movie buff, but this stereotype would relate to the music involved in that style of Media not just the media itself. My magazine shows a gamer on the front cover listening to music with his hands placed on the keyboard of a laptop. Laptops are very popular with families that share and often listen to music on them so this instantly would be a recognised as a music item with the reader. The stereotype on the front cover is portrayed to be focused and relaxed, wearing casual clothing and having a natural pose. This establishes on the front cover that this particular social group is relaxed, calm and enjoys what they do.

This is my magazine the one on the left, and on the right is a musician on a Mojo magazine, the difference in these is in mine hes younger, more upto date, brighter colours and he gives the impression of a new social group of a younger age. The figure from the Mojo magazine is that of a man who represents a different social group one of an older age that isn’t adapted with technology and prefers this style over the new generations. In my magazine, there are only two social groups, movie fans and gamers. The magazine depicts two different images of the person on the front cover playing video games whilst listening to the music, but the whole magazine isn’t just for that purpose its supposed to represent a missing layer in the magazine industry for those who want hear more than just rock and rap. That is why it represents a newer generation of social groups, and this magazine represents them using typical things such as digital styled fonts, abstract colour schemes and retro styled gaming themes.

Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
My magazine would be hard for someone to distribute, mainly because of its obscure genre. I wouldn’t suggest a gaming magazine or a move magazine because although their similar there goals are different. I did stumble across ‘WorldWide Magazine Distribution LTD’ on the web, and it appears they distribute a lot of magazines, not just music. This would appear great as it appeals to the United Kingdom and would be a unique place to start, as research shows there are no magazines that resemble my magazine genre so it would fill a hole in the market and this distributer would gain from that as they have no magazine similar to my genre or target audience. Not only would this help. It’d reach all around the UK as well so my magazine would get a lot of publicity.
Question 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audiences for my magazine are typically relaxed gamers, or movie buffs. Perhaps even internet surfers. They are either female or male and enjoy the sensation of music from inspirational films and video games.

This is Becky; she’s a female gamer and movie lover. She’s 17 lives in a small village and has a lot going on in her life, she goes to Sixth Form and partakes in card games, relaxes with sports such as scuba diving and enjoys a variety of music types. Becky spends most her time playing games, as she lives in a village with little else to do this is one of her favorite past times and she loves being able to listen to music. Becky doesn’t have a collection of music from games but does find a great deal of tracks and songs that she finds shock and awe; typically she’s an average gamer.

Question 5
How did you attract/address your audience?

I went to the effort of asking different friends and students from my Sixth Form their opinion of the best way to address someone in a magazine, most people liked a relaxed and not to formal approach of being polite but informative. The way I tried to implement this was as follows.

Compared to other music magazines, this is similar stance to some but mainly a unique one as alot of editors tend to keep to thier opinions when writing a magazine I wanted a completely unbiast apporach to this interview, give credit where it deserved and not slander an artist standing. By addressing the audience as educated and non formal I feel the effect that came out was useful and productive in my magazine as it worked well.

Question 6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Well all of my work went like this. I'd take photos using a Canon camera, other times I had to use a Dazzle DVC 170 to take in-game or in-move screenshots.

then I'd see which photos would be worth using and select the best looking photos. I'd then open these photos using Photoshop CS3,

then when I was done I would save them in a JPEG file so that they could be uploaded to my media blog at blogspot.
The technology I used to create these magazine pages and edit them was Photoshop CS3, the software allows for advanced editing and cutting of images and allows you to create realistic magazine pages with believable effects. I obviously used props, and the laptop seen on the front page and double spread was my laptop to write up all this work and edit it. Here is a screenshot of me whilst I was editing one of my prototype front page pieces. I’ve learnt how to extensively edit with Photoshop being able to add in and sculpt images using effects and tools. For example I used the effect ‘wind’ on the title in this shot, making it seem rusty and beaten but later removed it because I didn’t like how it obstructed slightly.
Question 7 (School Magazine Comparison)
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When I first made the school magazine it was with Microsoft Publisher, and it was rather pathetic. It was tacky, and looked ridiculous compared to a real magazine, the image was badly used and the subtitles were poorly edited. When compared to my front page you can tell the difference is quite drastic.

As you can tell from these two different magazine contents and front pages, they are majorly different. The school magazine compared to the fully edited Photoshoped version of the LINK magazine is poor. The use of Photoshop really helped make the magazine stand on its own as a major magazine, I've learnt from the school magazine how to make a proper magazine front page and contents. Using skills such as simple things like lighting and how to make the colours not clash, along with a detailed colour scheme really helped to establish the magazine. The school magazine lacked a lot of this, being plain and dull. With this I learnt that the front page has to be an instant eye catcher, to stand out amongst other magazines. In order to make it stand out I had to learn a lot about Photoshop and how it worked, so I spent time watching tutorials on the internet about how to use Photoshop. Now I can use special effects, make backgrounds transparent, blur, and even make the image glow or dark.

In Conclusion I've overall got a lot more experience in Photoshop and how to edit and create professional images so much I can now make professional magazines. I managed to download new fonts, new tools, and even create spectacular scenes with some basic images.

Magazine Research Double Page Spread

Double Page Analysis
The first 4 paragraphs on the bottom double page from Kerrang

The first thing that you see in this image is the figure on the right with an almost surreal hair style, leaning and pointing at ‘brain stew’ written in a very rogue font. This is clever as the image doesn’t explain anything at all but instantly draws the reader in as an attempt to point something out to or to stop the reader so they can’t then work out what’s being displayed on the page.

Another good thing about this double page is the box as the top left at a slanted angle, as this also instantly draws in the reader’s attention to the magazine. Its bold yellow headline is a eye catcher as well so that you’re immediately interested in reading what it says.

One of the problems with this magazine double page is that it’s got so much going on at once that it would most likely confuse the reader. There are a lot of different colours and fonts, which are all scattered in different boxes and circles that separate them. This is too hard for the reader to focus on and makes for an annoying approach to presenting the double page spread.

The page seems cluttered with so many boxes and writing that the figure on the right is covered and we can barely see him amongst all of the text, this is really irritating as it’s almost a chore having to search around for scattered text and boxes.

The next paragraph are on the top doublepage magazine.

There is nothing I like about the bottom double page magazine, it just looks completely ridiculous, and everything is too spaced apart. The picture is too dark and has no real impact leaving the reader not interested to read more. There’s too many different shades of colour and large titles spread about. There’s a few little charts with peoples names and starring but its all too mixed since there is too much happening its way to annoying to look at.

What I will be using?
-          Large images to draw out a reader
-          Bold titles to also draw out a reader
-          Columns to make it easier to read
-          Suitable Colour scheme

Magazine Research Content Pages

Contents Page Analysis

These 4 paragraphs are both on the top Mojo magazine

This is a contents page from Mojo, the things that really stand out in this magazine are the subtitled information, and the colour style really stands out with an organised use of arranged colours along this information (Yellow for page numbers, red for titles, black for subtitles and wording) this helps the reader by colour coding what each is and makes for an effective looking contents page as too many uncoordinated colours would make the reader confused.

There are 8 images alone on the contents page, but they appear mixed until you see the ‘cartoon’ image of a woman which appears overlapping the contents page this makes for an effective use of making the page seem artistic and new. As if its breaking the boundaries by having perfectly slotted images until you see this was at an angle overlapping.

At the bottom of this magazine, there are 3 people who are the editors. These images seem sloppy and make the authors look unappealing to the reader. If these images were edited to seem nicer I would have thought different but I don’t like the appeal of this since it’s not the reader’s intention to read about the author but what their magazine is about.

Although I like the cartoon image of the woman, I don’t like the way the other images are laid out it feels sloppy as well and quickly done a lot more work could have been added and it rather dull and uninventive.

These 3 paragraphs are both on the bottom Mojo magazine

The second magazine is rather good, and has a really nice picture that is just on its own very powerful having a instant eye attraction of an artist standing alone in the midst of the darkening clouds on a winding road. This is a really clever image and is something I would like to attempt if possible.  It has a strong feel and a bold atmosphere about it adding an instant effect when first glanced on.

The Columns on the left are effective as one does not have to turn there head to read, its again separated with colour coordination (Red for page number, Bold White for titles and smaller font white for the descriptions) This is effective as it makes navigation on this contents page easy for the reader.

I dislike near the top of the magazine where you can read the date and issue, and the lines that are both and below these two words. This is pointless and is almost filler as it bares no reference to the magazine itself, the lines are also quite distracting and take the effect of the image away slightly.

After studying these contents pages the things I’m going to consider placing in my magazine are.

-          Colour Coded Titles
-          Bold Images
-          Have Columns
-          Have images placed strategically

Magazine Research Front Pages

3 things I like about this magazine.

1 – The picture of Daniel Radcliff, is very eye catching and instantly draws in any reader as he can be recognised easily and is not obstructed by text.
2 – The picture at the bottom left fits in to fix a ‘yin-yang’ effect where one front cover doesn’t have enough on it.
3 – The colour scheme is much styled. Red being the eye catching EMPIRE, and white and grey with parts of yellow to equal the red.

3 things I dislike about this front cover.

1 – The fonts are dull, they have no real standing out appeal they just seem the most basic and cheap fonts you can get as if there was no emotion put into them.

2 – The bar code seems entirely out of place, and just masks Radcliff. The positioning isn’t bad it looks out of tone, and doesn’t fit with the scheme of the Magazine

3 – It feels empty, there’s a nice amount of images and text but it still feels empty maybe it could use a better background.
Things I would include in my front cover, an eye catching picture that’s certain. A list of certain things as well as this would make the reader try to associate themselves with the list.

This magazine from Mojo I like a lot of elements but here is what really stands out to me.

1-      The title, not Mojo itself but the title ‘Leonard’ is paced in the centre (I’ll mention the man in my second point) and this really boldly stands out as its one of the first things the eye is drawn to being that its directly spread across the centre.
2-      The picture of the artist behind the ‘Leonard’ is rather shock and awe as well. This image is black and white and a image of a man from the torso up to his head in a suit. It has a real achieving mood and excells at setting the scene on the magazine. I really think this works well.
3-      The colour scheme again is perfectly matched here; it has the black, white and red catching titles for quotes and interesting features.
Things I dislike on this magazine.

1 – The fonts, again I’m picky but this just seems lazy, the fonts whilst being bold don’t really catch the audience they appear dull and an everyday font for any magazine browser.

2 – The Free CD sticker at the top right, while giving away free items is a clever marketing stragedy this shape and style draws away from the style set by the powerful image, this ruins the magazine a lot for me since it feels more cheaper than it should do.

Things I wish to use in my magazine.

The colour scheme was great in this magazine; it really showed well and worked very great. The front picture works very nicely with the title and everything about this seems nice so I’m tempted to use the same style, but I'll probably use the colour scheme instead.

My Magazine's Double Spread Page LINK

Here is my magazine's double page spread. This is rather simple as to not be too over flooded with images or writing.
The above is the final version, I changed the questions and answers to be different fonts and easier to
recognise. Below is a different version of the double page, instead of a different font the questions and answers are labled.

My Magazine's Contents Page LINK

Here is my contents page for LINK.

My Magazine's Front Page LINK

The name of my magazine is called LINK.

When I first started this magazine, instead of doing a typical 'rock' or 'rap' I decided to branch out and choose a style of magazine that I've seen no one else portray. This style is the music that is heard in films, or video games and other styles of Media.

This allowed me to cover a huge vareity of famous songs and themes. For example I could of used the Estacy of Gold which was a famous song used in the 'The good, the bad and the ugly'

Anyway this gave me the perfect angle to make a music magazine based of this new genre.

This was the finished Version the one above.

The following are all edits and different front pages I used.

Emotion Photo Evaluation

The photo I used to show Anxiety was edited using Photoshop. The image consisted of 2 seperate photos taken, one of Eliot staring up at an angle and a photo taken at a mid shot of his expression being that of paranoia in other words anxiety. We then took another photo of a security camera from a low angle shot and had the light reflect on the glass protecting the cameras lense.

We then took both these images and add a bright light to help distinguish the camera more and draw the audiences eye on it, after this we blurred all around the camera and then added a new layer with Eliots pose. We smudged this image to curve it to fit the camera, and then changed the transparency so that it looked as if it was reflecting on the camera itself. This combined with the all mentioned gave us the finished product.

LIIAR
Language - Institution Ideology Audience Representation

The magazine utilises many different fonts, colours and sized imaging and text to give us a unique and bold magazine which can stand out in a modern day environment. The fonts vary from dark and malicious looking to light and standard, the effect is to transfer the effect of the music that the reader might listen to only in a form of imagery rather than sound. By using fonts that relate to the sound of rock, metal or any other type of music that in generalised in this magazine.

The sub title on the magazine says the 50 sexiest people in rock as chosen by you the 50 is in a larger font and bold in red, this being larger and a different colour instantly draws the readers eye into the magazine. The photos are those of famous of musicians in rather unnerving positions or sexually appealing ones, this has two different effects on the reader. The first one being that a rebel to society will find the unnerving images a interesting read, the sexual attraction with females on the magazine cover would also intrigue men into finding out more.

When you first stare at this front cover your eyes navigate the page by looking at the things that either, stand out the most are those which are vibrant colours or images of the unexpected. The images on this front cover are of artists and different coloured writing, the background consists of images relating to the text which sticks out boldly in comparison for example the word ‘sexiest’ can be related to a girl on the right who is posing in a sexual manor. The cover displays the best information that the rest of the magazine will contain, the less important things will be in a small print compared to a big front page title saying ‘50 sexiest people in rock’ this is directly foreshadowing the magazines contents to the reader.

Kerrangs main title and its subtitle ‘life is loud’ is directly imposing the main bands inside, and the genre in which those bands correspond with in this case this being rock, metal etc. These specific types of genre are often very loud, dark and gruesome. The title is referencing this and the label Kerrang is the brand name given to this type of magazine it makes it stand out and be original, allowing this makes it able to not get lost in a crowd of other magazines.

Each person posing in the images reflects differently on there gender, a female would be posing in a sexual manor to alert any male reader where as a male would be posing in a very ‘cool’ way as if he didn’t need the world, trying to be a rebel against society the usual teenage dream.

The magazine makes its money by drawing in a unique type of audience which relates to its magazine, using smart advertising campaigns and clever word layout the reader can be convinced on the first glance of the title alone if they are willing to buy it. The readers interest must be taken into account otherwise there target audience is lost along with any profit made.

The magazine on first glance appears to challenge the natural style of music along with traditional values, men wearing makeup and so forth. It seems to support a more dark and radical approach to music, it challenges traditional standards by having more heavy and dramatic music over slow and peaceful music.

The genres represented in this magazine are genres which involve a lot of rock and heavy instruments that cause a unique sound in the music industry allowing a outcast broad range of music known as metal. Sub genres are then created from this Genre allowing for even more unique sounds. This magazine focuses entirely on these Genres and not those of modern times or generalised mainstream artists. The other things that respond to this genre type are colours and symbolic meanings, for example depressing or dark images will inflict a lot of meaning into this music as it’s often fast and loud about a depressing matter. Colours like black like seen on the front cover are often used with these types of artists to yet again stand out from the crowd.

The target audience is those who often wish to stand out, or can reflect on the music. An example of this can be someone who finds being different a unique stand on society rather than following trends and fashion styles. Others may find its unique tone a interesting side or might find they can relate to what the style is giving off. A depressed person might enjoy the dark aspect of the music.

The magazine uses the genre to spark the colours, the dark images in our minds ‘sex’ for example is a word that wouldn’t openly be said to someone in public. It draws in our deepest thoughts and shows them to us on a page in order to draw us in. Using effects like this allows for us to be interested in the magazine, the colours and the wording will be a keen eye attraction for a passer by who might want to be drawn into reading it.

In these magazines are famous artists that correspond to the type of music they play or fall in place with. Artists like Cory Taylor from Slipknot would be seen here, but other Artists like Eminem or Justin Timberlake wouldn’t be seen on this magazine as they don’t refer to this type of music.

The magazine portrays men and woman is a very peculiar way, normally woman in a mainstream magazine would be made up or posing in some sexually revealing manor, this magazine whilst maintaining some of the original mainstream elements doesn’t contain as much as the above, it portrays woman as dark and not the clear sexual attraction. Whilst portraying men in a very sinister manor and rather ‘evil’, long hair and black to give a crazed look creating a sense of surreal coolness.

Race isn’t mentioned at all on the front cover, so it’s not made clear what there position is on the matter, although many different races play in metal bands. The social status isn’t revealed much either, it could be said that those posing are very low class due to their untidiness, but this again is just the style of the music.

Overall the magazine contains and reframes many elements in order to keep the audience happy; it’s a very dark and melodramatic magazine. It reflects on depression and dark colours with bold headlines of colours that we would often relate to danger (red in this case) or blood and so forth. It relies on the audience to read there magazines and with this it has to use a very original style. And we are then given this magazine in which is an unique take on society and its set of artists that play this genre of metal.

School Magazine Evaluation

School Magazine Evaluation

The magazine was made for the mind frame of year 7s to year 12’s or other college students. Its overall design is intended to entertain readers but to inform them at the same time with smart and up to date modern day references that youngsters can relate to. The front page and contents have the same design that allows the magazine to be easily memorable and noticeable, enough is colourful and noticed but not enough to be distracting or too bland.

The images are bright, full of colour and unique to the reader as they contain photos of the 6th Form centre so this is can be related to by other students, this also places the image as the centre of attention and contains the focus point for the front page. The fonts used are Arial Black as this is easy to draw attention by the reader and makes the text seem less dull than normal text. It also makes the magazine more adult aswell.

On the front page you can see lots of advertisements for whats actually in the magazine itself. The terms are also used to relate to children of a younger age like ‘ur’ which younger students will be able to understand and reflect better than adults would. Last of all the students can of course relate to the colours as they’re associated with the schools colours which are green. This is the biggest and most useful drawing focal point of the magazine itself.

Priory Paper – front cover

(Below) Main picture, bloom effect used to enhance colours, then certain parts were ‘grey-scaled’ to draw attention to the main building. As seen in the above finished front cover.
Different parts of the school give the reader an idea of what the school looks like. It is outlined in a green border to draw more attention.
The title and logo are features which will need to be memorable, and that keep in with the colour scheme.
I took the font and style from Microsoft Word.

- Other key features of the cover, (inside stories etc)
They keep with the colours (greens) and attract attention, (the explosion shape draws the reader).  The important parts are bold/underlined/in capitols.

The main colour scheme for the paper would be a variety of different greens, white and possibly red.
